Why do I like “The Question” most of any of my stories? For one thing, its subject—capital punishment—tends to draw from those favoring it or opposing it fervently self-righteous and simplistic argumentation, and in attempting a story on the theme I had to dig very deep into myself to come up with an insight into my own feelings. That kind of self-discovery is intensely gratifying to me.

For another thing, the large mail response, pro and con, to the story on its publication, indicated that I had certainly touched a nerve here, and touching nerves—which doesn’t happen all that often—is what I most hope to achieve in any story.
